The new paradigm of energy conversion has led to the emergence of high-efficiency and high-power-density power converters in renewable energy systems for applications such as high-voltage direct current transmission, photovoltaics, wind power, microgrids, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) etc. However, in these advanced systems, operating under complex environments and operating conditions, reliability has become an increasingly critical issue. To address this, robust signal sensing, reliable power quality management, and effective condition monitoring are essential to ensure the safe operation of power converter systems. This special issue aims to integrate advanced methods based on signal sensing, power quality optimization, and condition monitoring into converter control, operation, and/or maintenance strategies. Additionally, it will focus on the synergy of various technologies such as artificial intelligence, fault diagnosis, edge computing, and internet of things (IoT) connectivity to provide application-oriented operation and maintenance strategies, which contribute to improving converter reliability, ensure safe system operation, or optimize/reduce maintenance costs.

  • Reliability- oriented (optimal) control methods and active thermal management
  • Fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control methods
  • Real-time harmonic detection and mitigation for renewable energy application
  • Energy efficiency optimization and condition-based maintenance through power quality
  • Power quality optimization and condition monitoring considering edge computing
  • Development of HMI/software for condition monitoring/system maintenance
  • Efficient signal/data transfer and collaboration connected to the IoT
  • AI-based algorithms for signal sensing, power quality optimization, and condition monitoring
