It is our great pleasure to announce that the following 6 IES members have been made IEEE Fellows (effective Jan 1, 2020) through Industrial Electronics Society. Congratulations to all of them!

Mohamed Benbouzid

For contributions to diagnosis and fault-tolerant control of electric machines and drives

Mohamed Benbouzid received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Batna, Batna, Algeria, in 1990, the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble, Grenoble, France, in 1991 and 1994, respectively, and the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches degree from the University of Picardie “Jules Verne,” Amiens, France, in 2000. After receiving the Ph.D. degree, he joined the Professional Institute of Amiens, University of Picardie “Jules Verne,” where he was an Associate Professor of electrical and computer engineering. Since September 2004, he has been with the University of Brest, Brest, France, where he is a Full Professor of electrical engineering, while being since the Deputy Director of the Research Lab Institut de Recherche Dupuy de Lôme (UMR CNRS 6027) and Deputy Director of the Doctoral School on Engineering Sciences. Prof. Benbouzid was a 1000 Talent Expert Award recipient at the Shanghai Maritime University, Shanghai, China (2015-2018) where he is now a Distinguished Professor. His main research interests and experience include analysis, design, and control of electric machines, variable-speed drives for traction, propulsion, and renewable energy applications, and fault diagnosis of electric machines. Prof. Benbouzid is a Fellow of the IET. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal on Energy Conversion, Section Editor-in-Chief of the Applied Sciences Journal, and Subject Editor for the IET Renewable Power Generation. He is also an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion.

Kawai Eric Cheng

For contribution to electric vehicle technology and switchedcapacitor power conversion

Kawai Cheng earned his BSc and PhD degrees in electrical engineering both from the University of Bath, United Kingdom in 1987 and 1990 respectively.  Before he joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1997, he was with Lucas Aerospace, United Kingdom as a Principal Engineer and led a number of power electronics projects.

He received the IEE Sebastian Z De Ferranti Premium Award (1995), outstanding consultancy award (2000), Brussels Innova Energy Gold medal with Mention (2007), Special Prize and Silver Medal of Geneva’s Invention Expo (2011),    He is the recipient of the international award in 2016 iCAN Gold Medal for his contribution in  active suspension,  Hong Kong Innovation Gold award 2017 and Seoul International Invention Fair 2015 Gold prize for his contribution in super-capacitor  to electric vehicles. He has published over 400 papers and 7 books. He has over 100 interviews by media on his research and development. He is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, associate editor of IET Power Electronics, a fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and a chartered engineer in United Kingdom. He has chaired many international conferences.  He is now the Education Committee Chair of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community.

Victor Huang

For leadership in the development of microprocessors in mobility products

Victor is a Partner in Sage Technology Resources, a technology and business consulting services firm serving investment, early stage, growth stage and Global 1000 companies, where he specializes in the IT-Automotive sector – Electric Vehicles and infrastructure industry (EV), and in connected and autonomous vehicles. He is also on the Board of Directors at present and past startup companies in Silicon Valley.

A senior level high technology industrial management executive, Victor has held industry leadership positions as VP Engineering in numerous startups in Silicon Valley, developing wireless and mobility products in the telecommunications and consumer electronics industries.  He was the first Deputy Director of the Institute of Microelectronics (IME) in Singapore’s highly successful high technology industry, and led VLSI microprocessor chip design as Technical Manager at AT&T Bell Laboratories.  He holds international patents in the microprocessor architecture design and his background spans microcomputer architecture and systems design, consumer wireless and mobility products, autonomous and electrical vehicles, and standards.

A long-time IEEE member, Victor is an IEEE Life Senior member, Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Life AdCom member, IES Standards Technical Committee Chair, IES representative to the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Board, and a member of IEEE Communications and Technology and Engineering Management (TEMS) Societies. He has organized, chaired and co-chaired many IEEE conferences and Industry Forums. He has authored/co-authored over 40 IEEE and professional publications, and a recipient of the IEEE Standards Medallion for exception contributions to standards development.

Victor earned his B.S. degree from the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia in 1968, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia in 1971 and 1975 respectively, all in Electrical Engineering.

Shihua Li

For contributions to the theory of mismatched disturbance rejection in industrial systems

Shihua Li earned his B.Eng., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in control science and engineering from Southeast University, Nanjing, China in 1995, 1998 and 2001, respectively. Since 2001, he has been with School of Automation, Southeast University, now he is a full professor. He has published 2 books, over 180 international journal papers covering modeling, analysis and advanced control of mechatronic systems. He has been involved in over 20 research projects with industry for enhancing the performance or developing intelligent functions for mechatronic products.

He is the corecipient of 4 prize paper awards. He serves as associate editors of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control, etc. He is chair of IES Nanjing Chapter. He is a member of Technical Committee on Electrical Machines, Motion Control of the IES, respectively. He was the general chair of the 2019 IEEE Workshop on ADRC, the program chair of the 2016 IEEE International Workshop on Variable Structure Systems. He is one of Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researchers (Engineering) all over the world in 2017-2019.

Sheldon Williamson

For contributions to electric energy storage systems for transportation electrification

Sheldon S. Williamson is a Professor with the Smart Transportation Electrification and Energy Research (STEER) Group, Department of Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering, Ontario Tech University, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. He holds the prestigious NSERC Canada Research Chair position in Electric Energy Storage Systems for Transportation Electrification. His current research interests include advanced power electronics, electric energy storage systems, and motor drives for transportation electrification.

 

 

Ligang Wu

For contributions to sliding mode control and robust filtering

Ligang Wu is currently a full professor of Control Science and Engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, P.R. China. He was born in 1977 in Yihuang, Jiangxi Province, P.R. China. He received the BSc degree in Automation in 2001 from Harbin University of Science and Technology, Harbin, the MSc degree in Navigation Guidance and Control in 2003 and the PhD degree in Control Theory and Control Engineering in 2006, both from Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin. From January 2006 to April 2007, he was a Research Associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. From September 2007 to June 2008, he was a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Mathematics, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong. He was a Research Associate in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College London, London, United Kingdom. In 2008, he joined the Harbin Institute of Technology, P.R. China, as an Associate Professor, and was then promoted to a Full Professor in 2012.

Prof. Wu is a Fellow of the IEEE (for contributions to sliding mode control and robust filtering), the winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and the winner of the China Young Five Four Medal. He was named as the Chang Jiang Distinguished Professor in 2017, and Highly Cited Researcher since 2015.

Prof. Wu’s current research interests include analysis and design for complex dynamical systems (stochastic jump systems, singularly perturbed systems, switched systems, multi-dimensional systems), signal processing (digital filter design, signal processing for uncertain systems, optimal filtering), multi-objective control and optimization techniques, intelligent systems and robot technology, machine vision and intelligent detection technology, advanced control techniques for power electronic systems, and flight control. He has published 7 research monographs and over 170 research papers in international referred journals.

Prof. Wu currently serves as an Associate Editor (or Editorial Board Member) for a number of journals, including IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, Information Sciences, Signal Processing, IET Control Theory and Applications, Circuits Systems and Signal Processing. He is also an Associate Editor for the Conference Editorial Board, IEEE Control Systems Society. He is a member of program committee for some international conferences, and a very active reviewer for many international journals.
