Number of Student Branch Chapters (SBC’s) Reached the Highest in the IES History

The IEEE-IES student branch chapters have a significant increase during 2019-2020 even under the epidemic period. Up to the end of August 2020, IES has a total of 38 student branch chapters that reached the highest in IES history. There are 16 student branch chapters newly established which is a 73% increase since September 2019. Currently, our SBCs are located in over 12 countries including the USA, China, India, Australia, Poland, Korea, Sri Lanka, Italy, Russia, etc.

In June and September 2020, the membership team organized the student branch chapter chair meetings to deliver the latest news from IES and listen to the comments from SBC leaders and students. This meeting will become regular at least twice a year from 2021.

Student Branch Chapter Activities Under the COVID-19

IES Student Branch Chapters continue organizing technical activities under the COVID-19. The Sri Lanka Technological Campus (SLTC) started their journey with IES in 2019. The Induction Ceremony of The newly appointed governing body of the first IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Student Branch Chapter of Sri Lanka was successfully held on the 13th of December 2019, at SLTC. The Student Branch Chapter was formed under the IEEE student branch of Sri Lanka Technological Campus, Meepe. The SLTC’s SBC also organized two IES knowledge hub online workshops this year. Consisting of a highly informative session which included interactive questions.The workshops ended on a positive note, where students commented on the effectiveness of the session and how it was able to effectively break down such a difficult module into easier sections.

IES Support Student Branch Chapter Local Activities

To support IES Student Branch Chapter local activities, the Student Branch Chapter Local Activities Grant will start from October 2020. Every IES SBC can apply for the grant, application submission is due by end of the November every year. IES Chapter Committee will organize the review process and results will be announced by every December. Each IES SBC receives local activities grant needs to submit a report with video/photo and a proof of the expenditure breakdown. Some of the information regarding the SBC’s achievements may be compiled into the IES SBC newsletter and published on the IES website and the IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine.
