Abstract:
The rapid transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy systems is transforming the way electricity is generated, distributed, and consumed. At the heart of this transformation lies advanced power electronics, enabling efficient energy conversion, flexible control, and intelligent management across modern power networks and electric transportation systems. This talk explores some of the latest advances in power electronic technologies that are shaping the smart grid, renewable energy integration, and electrification of mobility.
Presenter’s bio:
Hadi Y. Kanaan (S’99-M’02-SM’06) received the diploma in electromechanical engineering from Saint-Joseph University of Beirut (USJ), the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Ecole de Technologie Supérieure (ETS), Montreal, Canada, and the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) from the Université de Cergy-Pontoise, Paris, France, in 1991, 2002 and 2009 respectively. He is currently a Full Professor and Head of the Doctoral School of Sciences, Engineering and Technology at USJ. His research interests concern modeling and control of switch-mode converters, high-power-factor rectifiers, power factor correction, active power filters, grid-connectivity of renewable energy systems, and EV charging systems design. He is an author of 1 book, 2 book chapters, 1 patent and more than 300 technical papers published in international journals and conferences. He is currently Vice-President for Workshop Activities in the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), and a member of the Nomination & Appointment Committee in IEEE Region 8. He served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions Industrial Electronics and is currently an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics on Industrial Electronics (JESTIE). He has co-founded the international conference Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (REDEC) and the International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering and Technology (IMCET) and organized more than 50 technical sessions at international conferences. He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2016 Research Excellence Award from the National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Lebanon, the 2023 Bimal Bose Award from the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, and the Honorary Researcher Award from Saint Joseph University in Beirut in June 2024.
