“...My personal experience in the IES Technical Activities started in 2006 in Istanbul... Later, I have been more and more involved in the Society’s business, attending to the AdCom meetings (and dinners), where I could meet the most talented experts and visionaries in the field of Industrial Electronics...”, click “read more” to read this unique testimony from IES Vice-President Technical Activities, Prof. Roberto Oboe.

IES established in June 2020 a new Technical Committee on Technology Ethics and Society (TES). The technical committee aims to provide a forum for academia and industry to exchange information, ideas, research directions, roadmaps, impacts, and lessons learned in the cross-disciplinary area pertaining to technology ethics and societal aspects.

Despite the global effect of Corona Virus, IES membership growth reached +22.5% (July 2020) with 1,584 new members within the 12 months period. That was in contrast with the continuous decline of overall IEEE membership in the same time period (-5.5%, July 2020) and the other Division VI Societies. A great achievement of all IES volunteers and IES membership committee, lead by Prof. Yousef Ibrahim!

FEATURED TECHNICAL ARTICLES

This paper has overviewed the WPT techniques, with emphasis on fundamentals, technical challenges, metamaterials, and typical applications. The paper firstly introduced the working mechanism of inductive power transfer (IPT) systems. Then, it compared four typical capacitive compensation networks, and elaborated the magnetic resonant coupling effect as well as the capacitive coupled power transfer (CCPT) mechanism. In addition, the application fields of 2-coils and 4-coils IPT system are thoroughly discussed.

Detection and isolation of single and mixed faults in a gearbox are essential to enhance the system reliability, lifetime, and service availability. This paper proposes a hybrid learning scheme for gearbox mixed fault diagnosis applications, consisting of multilayer perceptron (MLP)- and convolutional neural network (CNN)-based classifiers, and data fusion for enhancing the robustness.
