Gerhard P. Hancke Sr.
Editor-in-Chief of the Transaction on Industrial Informatics (TII) – term 2026-2028
Gerhard P. Hancke (M’88–SM’00–F’16–LF’19) received the B.Sc. and B.Eng. degrees (1970), and the M.Eng. degree (1973) from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, and the D.Eng. degree (1983) from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He is a Professor with the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Pretoria, South Africa and the College for Automation at the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China.
He is recognized internationally as a pioneer and leading scholar in Industrial Wireless Sensor Network (IWSN) research and was elevated to IEEE Fellow “for contributions to wireless sensor networks”. He initiated and co-edited the first Special Section on Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks in the IEEE Transaction on Industrial Electronics in 2009 and the IEEE Transaction on Industrial Informatics (TII) in 2013. He co-edited a textbook, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks: Applications, Protocols and Standards (2013), the first on the topic. Two of his papers in the IWSN field are ranked by the Web of Science as 5th and 11th most cited out of a total of 8,259 in the TII. He received the TII Best Paper Award for 2012 (within the area of IWSN). He co-edited a textbook, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks: Applications, Protocols and Standards (2013), the first on the topic.
His past editorial activities include AE and GE for TII, TIE and IEEE Access, Co-EiC for TII (2019-22), and Senior Editor for IEEE Access (2019-22). His first term as TII EiC commenced in 2023. Prior to this he was very active in conferences, amongst others as (Co-) Chair of ISIE1998, INDIN2007 and ICIT2013. He is well-known for chairing the IEEE Region 8 Conference, AFRICON, in 2002, 2004, 2009, 2011 and 2017 in different venues across Africa. He received the IEEE Larry K. Wilson Award (2007) “For inspiring membership development and services as a member of several regional and technical conferences worldwide”.
He was very active in IEEE activities from Section (Chair, etc.), through Regional (as Vice-Chair) to Board level, as well as in the IES since 1997, notably as voting (Senior) AdCom member since 2000, Secretary (2006–11), and member of many Standing Committees over years. On IEEE higher-level, he served amongst others as Vice-Chair: Member Development, Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Board (2008–09), Chair: BoD Ethics & Member Conduct Committee (2010–11), Chair: Admission & Advancement Committee (2010–11), Chair: MGA Member Engagement and Life Cycle Committee (2009), Member of the Conduct Review Committee (2022–23).
Okyay Kaynak
Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems – term 2026-2028
Okyay Kaynak received the B.Sc. (first-class honors) and Ph.D. degrees in electronic and electrical engineering from the University of Birmingham, Birmingham, U. K., in 1969 and 1972, respectively.
From 1972 to 1979, he held various positions within the industry that included 3.5 years in Saudi Arabia, working as a project engineer. In 1979, he joined the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey. He has served as the Chairman of the Computer Engineering and the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Departments and as the Director of Biomedical Engineering Institute at this university. Currently he is an Emeritus Professor, holding the title of UNESCO Chair on Mechatronics. He has hold long-term (near to or more than a year) Visiting Professor/Scholar positions at various institutions in Saudi Arabia, Japan, Germany, U.S., Singapore and China. He was, in 2013, awarded the prestigious “1000 People” Program professorship at Harbin Institute of Technology, China.
Dr. Kaynak current research interests are in the broad field of intelligent systems. He has authored three books, edited five and authored or coauthored more than 400 papers that have appeared in various journals, books and conference proceedings.
Dr. Kaynak is a fellow of IEEE. He is or has served on the Editorial or Advisory Boards of a number of scholarly journals. He was the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Trans. on Industrial Informatics during 2005-2006, IEEE/ASME Trans. on Mechatronics during 2014-2016 and Co-Editor in Chief of IEEE Trans. on Industrial Electronics during 2009-2012.
Dr. Kaynak is active in international organizations, has served on many committees of IEEE and was the president of IEEE Industrial Electronics Society during 2002-2003. He received IEEE Third Millennium Medal (2001), IEEE/IES Anthony J. Hornfeck Service Award (2005) and IEEE/IES Dr.-Ing. Eugene Mittelman Achievement Award (2011). Most recently, he received the China Friendship Award (2016), Humboldt Research Prize (2016) and International Academy Prize of Turkish Academy of Sciences (2020).
Giampaolo Buticchi
Co-Editor-in-Chief of TIE (Transactions on Industrial Electronics) – Machines and Drives – term 2026-2028
Giampaolo Buticchi (S’10-M’13-SM’17) received the Master degree in Electronic Engineering in 2009 and the Ph.D degree in Information Technologies in 2013 from the University of Parma, Italy. In 2012 he was visiting researcher at The University of Nottingham, UK. Between 2014 and 2017, he was a post-doctoral researcher and Guest Professor at the University of Kiel, Germany. He was appointed in 2017 at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China. He is now the Head of the Power Electronics, Machine and Control Research Centre at his institution. His research focuses on power electronics for renewable energy systems, smart transformer fed micro-grids and dc grids for transportation applications. Dr. Buticchi is involved in the major international organizations (IEEE, IET, RAeS, HEA) and he has been organizing tutorials and special session in the relevant conferences and journals related to Power Electronics.
Alejandro Gómez Yepes
Co-Editor-in-Chief of TIE (Transactions on Industrial Electronics) – Control and Signal Processing – term 2026-2028
Alejandro Gómez Yepes (Senior Member, IEEE) received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Universidade de Vigo, Vigo, Spain, in 2009 and 2011, respectively. From August 2016 to June 2018, he was a visiting scholar with the Advanced Electrical Machines & Power Electronics Lab (EMPE), Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA. He is currently Profesor Titular at Universidade de Vigo, where he belongs to the Applied Power Electronics Technology Research (APET) Group, at the Research Center in Technologies, Energy and Industrial Processes (CINTECX). His research has been mainly in the areas of control of voltage source converters and machine drives, with special focus currently on fault-tolerant multiphase drives. He has co-authored over 70 papers in high-impact journals and over 45 papers in peer-reviewed international conferences, with over 8000 citations so far. He has also received awards for his scientific output, including 4 best paper awards. Dr. Yepes has also been an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, of IEEE Journal of Emerging Selected Topics in Power Electronics (JESTPE), and of IET Electric Power Applications (EPA). In addition, he served as Academic Editor of Machines, as well as Guest Editor of special issues of IEEE JESTPE and Machines. He has received a Publons award as Top Reviewer in Engineering 2018, as well as Outstanding Editor Awards for Machines and IET EPA in 2022. Furthermore, he is a member of the Power Electronics Technical Committee of IEEE IES.
Roberto Oboe
Co-Editor-in-Chief of TIE (Transactions on Industrial Electronics) – Instrumentation and Sensors – term 2026-2028
Roberto Oboe obtained the Laurea degree in Electrical Engineering and the Doctorate degree from the University of Padova in 1988 and 1992, respectively. From 1993 to 2003, he has been with the Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informatica of the University of Padova. From 2003 to 2008 he has been Associate Professor in Automatic Control at the Department of Mechanical and Structural engineering, University of Trento. In 2008 he moved back to the University of Padova, Dep.t of Management and Engineering and, since 2023, he is Full Professor of Automatic Control.
During 1990, he has been visiting researcher at the Keio University – Yokohama – Japan. In 1996, he has been visiting the Biorobotics Lab. of the Univ. of Washington, Seattle, where he participated to the realization a system for the manipulation of objects in shared virtual environments. In 1997 he has been at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), where he has been working on Internet-based telerobotics with haptic feedback. In 2000, he has been visiting scholar at the Center for Magnetic Recording Research, UCSD. In 2002, he has been visiting faculty at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Univ. of California, Berkeley.
His interests are in the fields of Motion Control, Control and applications of MEMS devices, Applied Digital Control, Telerobotics, Virtual Mechanism, Haptic Devices, Biomedical Equipments. He is author/coauthor of more than 250 contributions, plus 8 international patents. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and, for the IES, he served as VP for Planning and Development, VP for Technical Activities, Founder and Chair of the Technical Committee on Motion Control, Associate Editor of the OJIES and Chair of the Management Committee of the IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics. He is currently voting AdCom member and Co-Editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. For the IEEE, he is also serving as a member of the Societies and Councils Review Committee and the IEEE Conference Portfolio Review Committee.
Dong Yue
Co-Editor-in-Chief of TII (Transactions on Industrial Informatics) – term 2026-2028
Dong Yue (Fellow, IEEE) received the Ph.D degree in control theory and control engineering from the South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China, in 1995. He is currently a Professor and the Dean of the Institute of Advanced Technology, and Director of Academic Committee of the University at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunication.
He is a Fellow of IEEE for his contribution to network-based control and its applications to power systems, a Foreign Full Member of the Russian Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of both Chinese Association of Artificial Intelligence and Chinese Association of Automation. He was a Changjiang Professor with the Department of Control Science and Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, from 2010 to 2013.
Currently, he is the Co-Editor-in-Chief for IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics and the Associate Editor for IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems and Journal of the Franklin Institute. He also served as the Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics from 2018 to 2022, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems from 2015 to 2018. Up to now, he has authored and co-authored more than 500 papers in prestigious international journals and 5 books in Chinese Science Press and Springer. He holds more than 100 patents. He was the recipient of the IEEE Rudolf Chope Research & Development Award in 2022, Norbert Wiener Review Award by IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica in 2020, the best paper award of IEEE Systems Journal in 2022 and the Outstanding Paper Award of IEEE Transactions Smart Grid in 2022. He was also recipient of several prestigious awards granted by Chinese government. His current research interests include networked control, optimization, multiagent systems, and smart grid.
