A message from IES President, Professor Milos Manic: In loving memory of our Past President, mentor, and a friend, Prof. Bogdan Dan Wilamowski

Dear AdCom Family,

I am deeply saddened to share this unfortunate update with you. One of the true legends of IES, Prof. Bogdan Maciej Wilamowski passed away on Tuesday, Sep. 7, 2025.

Dan Wilamowski made a deep impact on all of us and the world as a whole. He was a Past President of IES (2004-2005), past Editor in Chief of our lead transactions TII & TIE, past Div VI Director, Member of Polish and Hungarian Academy of Sciences, among many other roles.

I myself will remember Prof. Dan Wilamowski by his warm smile and big heart. His tireless and inquisitive mind knew no limits, from inventing new neural networks — like the algorithm he developed while flying to meetings, urging us to test it — to his remarkable skills in creating or fixing anything, whether it was a car or a house. I continue to draw on his analogies that compare the convergence of neural networks to skiing, a passion he embraced as a ski instructor in his youth.

Most importantly, Dan loved to share his discoveries, embodying the essence of a true mentor. He left a lasting impact on everyone he met; I often encounter his former colleagues and students around the world, and there’s always a story or valuable lesson to reflect on.

While we prepare a commemoration in his honor at the upcoming Oct. AdCom, I will ask all of us to share a memory or an anecdote from times with Dan.

Sincerely,

Milos
