IEEE Industrial Electronics Society along with Industrial Electronics Society Chapter, Power Electronics Society Chapter and Industry Relations Committee of IEEE Madhya Pradesh Section, India are elated to inform you about a talk on “Relevance of Nuclear Power and SMRs in Indian Perspective” by Shri Kamlesh N. Vyas, Former Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Government of India, on December 2, 2023, at 17.00 hours (IST) through virtual mode. We extend a cordial invitation to you to join this talk through the WebEx link given below. The abstract of the talk and brief biography of the speaker are as under:

ABSTRACT: In recent times, there has been a great thrust towards adopting cleaner energy solutions to achieve the net zero emissions worldwide. Due to inherent intermittency in renewables, like solar and wind and their relatively high cost of storage, nuclear power is considered among the low Green House Gas (GHG) emitters and provides an effective source of base load power generation. Again, India fairs poorly in human development index and one of the important means to improve the standard of living is increased industrialization. This would imply enhanced electricity generation in the country. Hence, nuclear power is vital in Indian perspective for shifting energy transitions from predominantly fossil to non-fossil based cleaner energy power generation. Many nations are giving significant importance to newer nuclear reactor technologies, especially Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). This lecture will give an overview of the need for enhancing electricity generation using nuclear power plants and also discuss various designs and technologies of SMRs, with reference to the Indian perspective.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE SPEAKER: Shri Kamlesh N. Vyas is presently a Homi Bhabha Chair Professor, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. He was Director, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai from February, 2016 to September, 2018. He was also the Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and the Secretary, DAE, from September, 2018 to April, 2023. He has unique expertise on the design and development of nuclear reactor fuels, thermal hydraulics, CFD analysis and stress analysis, reactor process systems design, etc.  He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE). He has received several prestigious awards, including the Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award in 2006, Indian Nuclear Society Outstanding Service Award in 2011 and DAE Awards for Excellence in Science, Engineering and Technology in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014, for completing complex reactor related activities in the country.
