At the end of spring semester of the academic year 2023-2024, four students from IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Heliopolis University student branch (Ahmed Wageh, Marwan Domiaty, Farah Yehia and Mohamed Talawy) under supervision of IEEE Industrial Electronics Egypt Chapter Chair (Dr. Hady Habib Fayek) developed an industrial prototype to produce and store green hydrogen.

The developed system needs 1200 watts of sustainable energy for which the students developed a wind turbine from local materials to operate the electrolyzer (hydrogen generator) and they stored it in a 150 bar cylinder. The system is designed to produce and store 60 liters of green hydrogen hourly with efficiency of 64%. The electrolyzer was developed from local Egyptian materials with 5.33 % concentration of sodium hydroxide electrolyte, 14.5 volts, 14.2 ampere using 316L stainless steel plates with surface area of 400 cm2.

The prototype turned into a startup named Wind Wise with great interest from different stakeholders in Egypt as many Egyptian newspapers wrote about this project. The Industrial Electronics Society helped the students to reach this stage of high quality project that turned to be a business by giving them fund as student branch and also by giving them the chance to attend lectures and webinars about this very important topic. This startup may put Egypt as a big player of hydrogen energy worldwide!
