Discover the Winners of the IEEE IES Generative AI Hackathon Challenge 2024!
By Prof. Daswin De Silva, Project Lead, TC Chair Responsible AI, WIC Chair.
The first IES Gen AI hackathon was successfully conducted from January 2024 to August 2024
The hackathon consisted of eight sprints, starting with 1) initial workshop on Gen AI capabilities in industrial systems, 2) team formation and proposal submission, 3) team presentations, evaluation and shortlisting, 4) Gen AI solution design and development, 5) solution prototyping and evaluation, 6) project documentation, 7) presentation and 8) compilation and submission of full paper to IECON 2024.
Following our AI-based, personalized promotional campaigns, we received 138 expressions of interest (EOIs) from 20 countries, this included 132 student teams and 6 industry teams, total participant count was 367. Of 132 EOIs, we had to shortlist just 55 teams for continued participation due to time, resource and mentoring constraints, as well as team maturity in AI research. The 55 teams were assigned mentors who met virtually with every team once a week to develop their concept from design through to development and evaluation. At mid-point of the hackathon, sprint 3-4, we further shortlisted 36 teams due to technical feasibility, timely completion, likelihood of paper submission to IECON. In sprint 7-8, we selected 12 teams based diverse technical criteria, research quality and research depth expected of submissions to the IECON. From July through to August, we submitted 12 papers and we have received acceptance for 9 papers, which will be presented at IECON in November 2024. With 9 papers (from 6 countries), we have contributed to 50th IECON with a very successful special session, SS41 – The Responsible Practice of Generative Artificial Intelligence for Industrial Applications.
Join us at IECON 2024 to support and advocate for student success in Gen AI for industrial applications with IES!
